Coherent is committed to doing business with environmentally responsible suppliers. All suppliers are expected to ensure parts and materials meet the growing list of substance regulations, including RoHS, REACH, China-RoHS, and Conflict Minerals.

Adhering to the expectations outlined in the Supplier Environmental Compliance Requirements document, the Compliance Specifications for MCX Materials, and by signing the Supplier Environmental Certification of Compliance (these documents are in the adjoining ‘Compliance Requirements’ area), the Coherent supply base becomes a strong partner and helps ensure continued production of environmentally safe products.

Coherent is dedicated to being a catalyst for environmental improvement in our industry - identifying and exploring ways to reduce the global footprint of our facilities and to improve the efficiency of Coherent laser products.

Laser technology is by its nature energy-intensive. The single biggest impact Coherent can make on the environment is to improve the efficiency of Coherent laser products. Coherent has invested extensively in research and development over its history to develop lasers with improved performance, operating lifetime, and utility efficiency (power and water). The new technologies have enabled significant reductions in power consumption for Coherent customers and operations. Coherent has also developed laser-based materials processing applications that increase efficiency and reduce pollution in diesel and gas turbine engines.

Coherent Compliance with REACH Statement:

Registration, Evaluation, Authorization, and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) - Coherent Position

REACH is a European Union Commission (EUC) Regulation on chemicals and their safe use (EC 1907/2006) entered into force on 01 June, 2007 and will be phased in until 2018.

Coherent supports the overall REACH legislation objective in improving the protection of human health and environment through the better and earlier identification of intrinsic properties of chemical substances. Coherent closely monitors developing REACH legislation globally. Coherent and Coherent products supplied by Coherent meet all applicable REACH requirements including but not limited to: Annex XIV list of substances subject to authorization, Annex XVII restricted substances and SVHC communication requirements under REACH Article 33. Coherent will ensure continuous compliance with these requirements, including measures that amend or supersede those and is committed to providing our customers with information about substances in its products as required.

Under REACH, registration of substances which are used in the manufacturing of articles do not apply to Coherent operations.

Coherent products are “articles” as defined in REACH Article 3(3) and do not release substances under their normal use. Suppliers of articles must provide recipients with information on Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC) if those are present above a concentration limit of 0.1% on an article level. As Coherent’s duty to communicate information on substances in articles, the delivered product(s), based on Coherent’s knowledge, may contain the listed chemical substance(s) included on the REACH Candidate List at this link: REACH Regulation Article 33 Obligations.

Coherent will communicate our continuing efforts to comply with REACH as we gather and analyze data from our supply chain. In addition, Coherent will respond to changes to the SVHC list as they are published. Coherent will continue to work with our supplier base to reduce or eliminate those SVHCs from its products and packaging, and to ensure that all SVHC’s are notified to the European Chemicals Agency where practical to comply with the REACH requirements.

Coherent will post information on SVHCs to this website as the information becomes available and assures its customers that our products are in full compliance with the EU REACH requirements.

Coherent’s Position on the Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS)

Coherent closely monitors developing RoHS legislation globally. Coherent and Coherent products supplied by Coherent meet applicable RoHS requirements. Coherent will ensure continuous compliance with applicable requirements, including measures that amend or supersede those.

Coherent supports the overall RoHS legislation objective of contributing to the protection of human health and the environment, including the environmentally sound recovery and disposal of waste electrical and electronic equipment, and has a comprehensive compliance program in place to help ensure that applicable obligations continue to be met. Coherent is strongly committed to continue working with customers and its supply chain to implement applicable RoHS requirements as they continue to evolve, and help ensure continuous compliance. Additionally, Coherent works with electronics industry peers and other stakeholders to promote common regulatory and industry approaches to RoHS compliance.

On 4 June 2015, the EU commission published a new Directive 2015/863/EU to amend Annex II to EU RoHS 2 Directive 2011/65/EU. DEHP, BBP, DBP and DIBP will be restricted from 22 July 2019 for all electrical and electronic equipment apart from Category 8 (medical devices) and Category 9 (monitoring and control equipment) that will have an additional two years to comply by 22 July 2021. Coherent is fully compliant with Directives 2011/65/EU and 2015/863/EU.

WEEE Compliance- Directive 2012/19/EU

What is WEEE?

"WEEE" stands for "Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment" (also known as "e-waste"). It refers to regulations, typically passed at a country, state or provincial level, aimed at promoting the reuse and recycling of electrical and electronic equipment and thereby reducing resource consumption and the amount of e-waste going to landfill. Requirements of WEEE regulations include, among others, financing the collection, treatment, recovery and environmentally sound disposal of WEEE.

With the rapidly expanding use of electrical and electronic products globally and the resulting growth in e-waste, more and more jurisdictions are enacting WEEE regulations. Coherent closely monitors developing WEEE legislation globally and complies with applicable WEEE regulations.

The European Union (EU) WEEE Directive, 2012/19/EU of July 2012, supersedes the original directive, 2002/96/EC of January 2003. The Directive is implemented through national regulations in all European Economic Area (EEA) countries including all EU member states, the UK (non-EU member state), Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway & Switzerland.

EU Battery Position Statement

The European Union (EU) Battery Directive 2006/66/EC was enacted in September 2006 and has been implemented through national regulations in all European Economic Area (EEA) countries including all EU member states, Norway, Liechtenstein, Iceland and the UK.

Coherent closely monitors developing battery legislation and complies with the EU Battery Directive and EEA national regulations, as applicable.

Requirements of the EU Battery Directive and national regulations generally include, among others, the following:

• Information requirements for end-users about, inter alia, potential effects on the environment and human health of substances as well as the desirability of not disposing of waste batteries and accumulators as unsorted waste and of participating in their separate collection so as to facilitate treatment and recycling.
• Financing the collection, treatment, recovery and environmentally sound disposal of batteries. Coherent meets this requirement through membership in approved compliance organizations.
• Labeling batteries with a crossed-out wheelie bin symbol to help minimize battery disposal as unsorted municipal waste and facilitate their separate collection.
• Meeting the chemical substance restrictions of the EU Battery Directive.

The symbol of the crossed-out wheeled bin indicates that the product falls into the scope of the WEEE Directive and must not be disposed of into unsorted waste. It also indicates "separate collection" for all batteries and accumulators.

By ensuring this product is disposed of correctly, you help prevent potential negative effects onto the environment and human health due to inappropriate waste treatment. Please contact us if you want to use our return for recycling infrastructure.

It is the responsibility of the user of the electronic product to separate the battery - in so far as technically possible - prior to disposal. It is also the responsibility of the user to delete any personal data in so far applicable.
