Coherent laser cutting tools can cut a wide assortment of composites including:

New lightweight, fiber reinforced polymers are difficult to machine with conventional cutting tools. This has led many users to the non-contact cutting capabilities of a laser. Thin, uncured pre-prep sheets in thickness up to 0.5mm can be precisely trimmed or sized at very high speeds, and you do not have to worry about gumming up a cutting tool. The heat from the laser’s cutting action fuses the edges, thus preventing fraying of the fibers.

Coherent laser cutters can cut thicknesses of materials up to ¼ inches for fiberglass, ¼ inches for phenolic and ¾ inches for Corian. And, our laser cutters produce extremely precise edges directly from your file. Perfect for inlays and other applications where precision is a must.

Coherent laser cutting tools can cut a wide assortment of fabrics including:

  • Cotton
  • Kevlar
  • Polyester Fabrics
  • Velcro

Most fabrics can be easily and precisely cut with a CO2 laser. The resultant cut (particularly with man-made fibers) is a clean edge free from loose fibers. For this reason lasers are often used for cutting fabrics used in medical applications or where sealed edges are required. Applications using fabric range from multi layered fabric patches to precision-drilled arterial stints.

Many fabrics, including natural and synthetic textiles, can easily be cut with a laser. The lack of thickness, coupled with their high combustion ability minimizes the power output requirements of a laser to no more than a few hundred watts. Because the laser is non-contact, the resultant edges are clean and free from fraying. In some materials, such as polyester, a thing microscopic seal will even be created. Cotton can still be frayed after the cutting is complete, but will not be caused by the laser itself.

Most customers involved in fabric cutting use Coherent laser cutting system in a flatbed configuration. They place sheets of material, stacked when appropriate, in the system. Following completion of the laser cutting process, the cutting pallet is rolled out of the machine and cut pieces are removed.

Coherent laser cutting tools can cut a wide assortment of flex circuit material including:

  • Polyester
  • Polyimide (Kapton)

Flexible circuits include flat flexible cables, flexible printed circuits and rigid-flex assemblies that are constructed of Copper conductors laminated between layers of flexible dielectric material. The most common dielectric materials used for flexible circuits are Polyimide and Polyester.

Lasers are becoming increasingly necessary in this industry as parts become more complex and circuit densities increase. Additionally, Copper does not absorb the light energy wavelength used by CO2 lasers. This means Coherent laser cutters are perfect for Polyimide or Polyester stripping in the manufacture and finishing of flexible circuits.

Polyimide, also known by its DuPont brand name as Kapton, is more expensive than polyester, but is often chosen because of its excellent thermal, mechanical, chemical and electrical properties. Coherent's laser cutters designed for flex circuits utilize lasers at a wavelength 3 times the energy of the standard laser. The higher energy absorption results in quicker vaporization of the material and smaller Heat Affected Zone (HAZ) damage, which greatly minimizes the charring that normally occurs when laser cutting Kapton.

The manufacturing process used to create flexible circuits involves sandwiching circuit assemblies between sheet materials in a heated platen press. The process can result in some float and movement of parts. For this reason, most Coherent flexible circuit customers will select to use our machine vision system to identify and register individual circuit structures before de-panelization.

Many organic materials, as well as natural and synthetic textiles, can easily be cut with a laser. The resultant edges are clean and free from fraying. Even material with fiber or steel cord reinforcement can be cut with a laser.

Both natural gum and synthetic rubber materials in thicknesses up to 9mm readily vaporize from the heat of a focused laser beam. With a Coherent laser cutting system, you can achieve high precision on items such as gaskets.

The laser is completely non-contact, so you don't have to worry about stretching or distorting of the material due to the impact of a laser cutting tool. There is also zero tool-load, so distortion due to material handling is not an issue.

Steel rule dies are still used for cutting many thin sheet materials in production. Products such as membrane switches, machine control panels and many printed products require cutting and trimming of complex shapes, aligned with the printed artwork.

Steel rule dies are difficult to design, slow and expensive to make and greatly limit the geometry you can cut. They are also large and expensive to store. They are efficient for cutting very large quantities of simple shapes, but are impractical for prototypes, small part quantities or fast turn-around.

Due to the large mechanical forces involved, steel rule dies have severely limited lifetimes and must be replaced frequently. Furthermore, design changes cannot be easily handled using dies because a brand new die must be purchased each time a design change occurs. This can be especially problematic and expensive while manufacturing prototypes and short production runs.

Another drawback of mechanical dies is that intricate designs, sharp corners and closely spaced details cannot be easily created using mechanical dies.

All these problems are eliminated when using software controlled laser cutter because a laser is a non-contact tool and design changes can be made "on the fly" through software control. Paper products can easily be cut with a laser. The lack of thickness, coupled with their high combustion ability minimizes the power output requirements of a laser to no more than a few hundred watts. The resultant edges are clean, precise, and free from burning.

As with a die, paper and cardboard can be stacked while using a laser cutting machine for cutting that's even more efficient. Adhesive backed materials can be also stacked and effectively cut with a laser without gumming up the machine.

Kiss-cuts of any material are also easy to do, and can be done simultaneously with through-cuts, making Coherent's laser cutting tools ideal for overlays and labels. Labels can be made to include an additional tab to make the label easier and faster to apply, significantly decreasing application time and increasing value to your customer.
