9th Annual Southeast Multiphoton Confocal User Group Meeting and Workshop

Sponsored by Zeiss and Coherent
August 27th and 28th, 2009

North Carolina Research Campus, Kannapolis, NC (just outside Charlotte)
August 27th (Workshop)
and
August 28th (User Group Meeting)

Coherent and Zeiss would like to invite you to 9th meeting of the Southeast Coherent Zeiss MPE User group meeting to be held this year and for the first time out side of the Atlanta area, at the North Carolina Research Campus (NCRC), in Kannapolis North Carolina. (please see map) Each year we see more groups get involved with the advanced microscopy techniques using two photon confocal imaging systems and each year our  conference grows in size as we add these new groups to our user family. The new Kannapollis facility will offer us a great venue to bring our user family together.

This year's Southeast Multiphoton Confocal Users Group Meeting, part of the Southeast Ultra Fast Conference Series, and the associated Zeiss/Coherent microscopy workshop, will be held on Thursday and Friday, August 27th and 28th, 2009. This year we are pleased to able to use the extensive and world class facilities at the NCRC and the David H. Murdock Research Center for the Thursday workshop and hands on training sessions and then on Friday for our user group meeting and presentations from students and principle investigators from around the Southeast.

For our 9th meeting of the MPE user Group meeting we are very privileged and proud to have Dr Dave Piston of Vanderbilt University to join us as this year’s plenary speaker.

Dave is a Professor in the departments of  Molecular Physiology & Biophysics, Physics, and Bio-Engineering at Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tennessee.  He is an Elected Fellow, in the American Physical Society since 2001, awarded the Stanley Cohen Award at Vanderbilt University for distinguished research in 2004, and since 2005,  the chair of the  NIH Microscopic Imaging (MI) Study Section. Among the many hats, to include directing the activities of his own highly productive group of researchers, Dave is the scientific director Cell Imaging Resource Core as well as the director of the Vanderbilt Biophotonics Institute. He is also the co-director for biomedical application of Vanderbilt's Advanced Computer Center for Research and Education (ACCRE).

Dave’s talk is titled, ““Using multi-photon excitation to peek and poke at live cell signaling”

The Meeting- Workshop: Our workshop is about hands on opportunity and discussions of real world applications and techniques. We will have presentations that will be of interest to the novice and to the most experienced user. The workshop will include a special break out session just for people who have never worked in the MPE application area and want to learn the basics.  We are in the process of developing the workshop schedule so please visit our web site, for the full workshop schedule in the next few weeks.  It is always a very full day but well worth the time invested. Lunch will be provided.

The Meeting – User Group Presentations On Friday we will have our day-long user group meeting with our plenary talk and other technical presentations from groups engaged in research using MPE as an application tool. You will also have the opportunity to learn about the next generation of Chameleon ultrafast lasers, and accessories from Coherent and the new Carl Zeiss LSM 710 NLO Laser Scanning Microscope.

We are actively seeking presenters in both our workshop and user group meeting. If you would like to make a presentation, please go to our registration page and submit your paper/presentation for consideration.

The conference is a rare opportunity to learn about the research work from some of the most prestigious groups here in the Southeast. and this year we add our friends from the mid west to our invited group. Please make sure you add it to your schedule and register early. The registration form is located in the related links section below.

Our key goal is to offer a venue for collaboration and networking within the Southeast. The interaction between groups, students, and principal researchers has been the hallmark of our meeting. We would like to make this year's MPE Users Group Meeting the best to date with your participation and support.

As our speakers program is solidified we will be updating our website with the latest information. Please see the conference schedule for more information.

STUDENT ORAL PRESENTATIONS
Each year the conference sponsors a student-led poster session on Friday afternoon, during the lab tours and after-hours reception. We invite you to be part of this growing component of the conference, which includes judging, and a prize for the best student poster. Please use the web site registration page to submit your poster abstract for inclusion in the afternoon session. We offer travel grants to students making presentation to off set travel costs to the meeting. Please see the registration web site to apply for a travel grant.

Prior to  the student poster session each student presenter will present a single slide while making a one minute oral presentation providing our attendees a preview of what they will see in the afternoon, during the poster session. If you are a student and are interested in being a part of this exciting tradition to the MPE User Group meeting, please register and indicate in the presentation submission form that you are student and would like to be considered for inclusion in this portion of our meeting.

NO COST TO YOU
Coherent and Zeiss team up each year and are very pleased to be able to offer attendance to both the microscopy workshop and the multi-photon user group meeting, at no cost to you. You will be our guest for a catered buffet style lunch on Friday noon.

TOUR OF THE FACILITIES
At the conclusion of the oral presentations, we will conduct a full behind the scenes  tour of the David H. Murdock Research Institute, which houses one of the largest and most advanced scientific equipment collections of its kind anywhere in the world, including state-of-the-art technology in genomics, proteomics and metabolomics.

Please forward this notice to others in your group and on campus that may have some interest in the conference and workshop.

Of special note, all communication regarding the conference, to include updates, list of speakers, abstracts, and reminders will be done through e-mail and our web-site. Please register on the web site. There is a section where you can register multiple people from the same group. All registrants will receive routine communication regarding the conference via mail.
