  • Sapphire Laser Family Sapphire 458 LP
    20/50/75 mW at 458 nm
    New Sapphire 458 LP

Sapphire™ lasers are based on Optically Pumped Semiconductor Laser (OPSL) technology. Introduced in 2001 as the first commercially available 488 nm all solid-state solution, Sapphire lasers drive the change from legacy air-cooled ion lasers.

Since the introduction of the 488 nm Sapphire Coherent has expanded the Sapphire family with 460 nm, 514 nm, 532 nm, 561 nm and 568 nm releases. By now more than 20,000 Sapphire lasers have been installed, featuring outstanding reliability and performance. During ISAC 2010 Coherent is now introducing the new Sapphire 458 LP with power levels of 20 mW, 50 mW and 75 mW.

Sapphire delivers consistent quality and reliability. Laser for laser. Instrument for instrument.

Sapphire LP (Low Power) Sapphire LP (Low Power)
Low power, CW blue, green and yellow lasers providing industry leading beam quality, power stability and low noise at 458 nm, 460 nm, 488 nm, 514 nm, 532 nm, 561 nm and 568 nm. All Sapphire LP products come with the same optical parameters, mechanical and electrical requirements, and interfacing/ controlling. Their superior parameters form/ fit/ function compatibility, proven reliability and low cost of ownership make Sapphire the ideal laser solution for e.g. life science, forensic, environmental protection, and metrology.

Sapphire HP (High Power) Sapphire HP (High Power)
High power, CW lasers delivering up to 500 mW at 488 nm with excellent beam parameters and power stability. The air-cooled packages feature analog and digital interface options and are applied in power-demanding applications e.g. in flow cytometry and sequencing.

Sapphire Driver Unit Sapphire Driver Unit
Controller and power supply in a wall plug-ready box, featuring a standby/laser ON switch and remote control options via analog, RS-232 and USB interface. Enables and simplifies stand-alone applications (CDRH compliant).

Sapphire CDRHThe standard Sapphire LP and Sapphire HP lasers are for OEM integration only.

The Sapphire in stand-alone configuration comes with a turn-key driver unit in which the controller and power supply are integrated. This wall plug-ready unit features a standby/laser ON switch and remote control options via analog, RS-232 and USB interface and. The stand-alone Sapphire is CDRH compliant. Also in stand-alone configuration proper heat-sinking of the laser head is important. Upon request, suitable heat-sinks are available as an accessory.

Sapphire Optically Pumped Semiconductor Lasers (OPSL) are all solid-state CW lasers. Their unique features such as power scalability, wavelength flexibility, excellent beam parameters, power stability and reliability enabled a wide range of applications. We continuously expand and update our product spectrum with legacy and customized wavelength products to optimally cope with your demand and to enable future applications.

Sapphire’s elegant and simple OPSL design - realized with PermAlign™ solder-bonded optics, volume manufactured and hermetically sealed in a controlled cleanroom environment - delivers consistent quality and reliability. Sapphire's success story - reflected in more than 20,000 installations since 2001 – is based on its outstanding performance characteristics:

    Superior application parameters

    • Mutliple wavelengths, power classes and customized solutions
    • Outstanding power stability and lowest noise
    • Superior beam quality

Ease of integration – ease of operation

    • Air-cooled, compact, modular design
    • OEM and stand-alone CDRH configurations
    • Diffraction limited beam quality
    • 458/460/488/514/568 nm: drastically reduced power consumption, heat dissipation, footprint compared to (air-cooled) ion lasers
    • 532 nm: no green noise, no complex resonator design required, no thermal lensing compared to Nd:YAG/ YVO4 lasers
    • 561nm: 4x higher efficiency/ less power consumption and heat dissipation than “yellow YAGs”
    • Flexible interface concept: analog, RS232, USB
    • Same FFF of all Sapphire LP models
      - Identical: optical/ mechanical/ electrical/ interfacing/ controlling

    Superior reliability and economy

    • Proven reliability: more than 20,000 installations
    • PermAlign™ technology: unsurpassed robust and stable
    • Robot-assisted, cleanroom-built and hermetically sealed
      - Best reliability, lifetime and unit-to-unit consistency
      - Virtually no downtime, maintenance-free operation over thousands of hours
      - Low cost of ownership

What's more, laser parameters stay stable over time due to Coherent’s unique and patented Permalign™ technology: the optical components are aligned to optimum and then soldered. Therewith the optimal alignment is frozen over the lifetime of the product, the laser becomes highly insensitive to vibration and thermal cycles. All Sapphire lasers are manufactured in controlled cleanrooms and hermetically sealed, before being run through rigorous testing procedures designed to keep variances from laser to laser to a minimum. This results into lasers with outstanding performance characteristics, best unit-to-unit consistency, and superior lifetimes.

Sapphire provides wavelengths formerly available only with ion and Nd:YAG/ YVO4 lasers but avoids disadvantages of these technologies. Due to the compatibility with their legacy wavelengths instrument manufacturers can directly integrate Sapphire into their existing designs and use the same optics and filters as already employed.

Sapphire comes with a future-safe, flexible interface concept: analog, RS232 or USB – it is up you to select your communication channel. This interface concept has been designed to support your laser application and sustain the fast changing demands and developments of your industry in the coming years. The modular concept with small-footprint components and high electrical efficiency further facilitates and simplifies integration not only into OEM instrumentation with their reduced physical, electrical and thermal demands.

We continuously expand and update our Sapphire product spectrum with legacy and customized wavelength products to optimally cope with your demand and to enable future applications. Independent of the wavelength, all Sapphire LP versions come with the same form-fit and function:

    • Identical optical parameters (apart from the wavelength)
    • Identical mechanical dimensions
    • Identical electrical requirements
    • Identical interfacing: operation, control, monitoring
