Lasers are widely accepted today as part of many important industrial manufacturing applications including cutting, drilling, welding, cladding, heat treating, and marking of metals and non-metals. We supply high-power lasers for metal processing as well as low-to-medium power lasers for non-metals processing, precision micromachining, and marking.

Non-Metal Processing: Cutting, Drilling, Joining
This area includes such applications as the cutting and joining of plastics, as well as drilling of a variety of non-metals using our Diamond CO2 lasers and our FAP System diode lasers; the cutting, perforating, and scoring of paper and packaging materials; and various cutting and patterning applications in the textile industry.

Our AVIA and Matrix ultraviolet lasers are being used extensively for the precision machining of a wide range of specialty and brittle materials including glass and plastics.

Green Laser Marking and Coding
Lasers have been increasingly used instead of ink-jet coding due to both aesthetic and environmental pressures. We provide lasers for all-important marking applications. Our solid-state Prisma and Matrix lasers are used to create high-quality, gray-scale images for ID cards, and our Excistar excimer lasers are used for the marking of diamonds.

Metal Processing: Welding, Brazing, Cladding, and Heat Treating
Coherent is a technology leader in industrial diode lasers. Our HighLight line of industrial diode laser systems are based on Coherent's proprietary, high reliability micro-channel cooled diode laser bar technology. The primary applications are welding, brazing, cladding, and heat treating of a wide range of metals and alloys, including steel and aluminum. For these processes, it offers several advantages over the traditionally employed laser and non-laser technologies. In particular, it offers higher efficiency, lower operating costs and smaller size with fiber delivery, making it easier to integrate, and more economical to operate.

Making Shoes that Fit Exactly Right
Lasers are used in the manufacture of many consumer products, including shoes. Major shoe manufacturers have used Coherent lasers to cut templates for marking leather; these marks then guide the operator during actual leather cutting. The use of a computer-controlled laser system to cut the templates assists manufacturers in keeping up with demand, and eliminates the need for costly outsourcing of production processes. Instead, shoe companies use our lasers to produce their unique templates on site.
