Multiphoton excitation (MPE) microscopy, in particular, is revolutionizing cell biology. This technique uses ultrafast laser pulses that are typically about one trillionth of a second long to produce high-resolution, three-dimensional images at precisely selected depths within a single cell. The near-infrared wavelengths used enable the microscope to see deeper into cells and also reduce damage to the cell, allowing imaging to be sustained for longer periods without destroying a specimen.
