Greetings friends, hope you have all enjoyed a productive year so far and are enjoying the new fall weather. It’s time to begin planning for the next Coherent sponsored Southeast Ultrafast Conference.

This year we are very excited as we will be holding the meeting at  Duke University for the first time ever and this year we have a unique and very exciting opportunity.  Dr. Warren Warren, James B. Duke Professor and Chair, Department of Chemistry and Director, Center for Molecular and Biomolecular Imaging has invited SEUFC to join with the Center for Molecular and Biomolecular Imaging and their meeting, "New Directions in Microscopy: Sharper, Deeper, Smarter”. The three-day, combined meeting begins on Monday Dec 14 and runs until Wednesday Dec 16th. (Please note: We are a few weeks earlier than our normal January date, but we did not want pass up this exciting opportunity to join the two meetings).  Each portion of the conference will be held during a day and half time frame with CMBI portion starting first followed by the SEUFC portion. Please make plans to join both programs.

The Southeast Ultrafast Conference  has become know for it’s unique opportunity to form collaborations across campus and between universities. It is also an excellent opportunity to have your students interact with research professors from around the region and to see first hand the research programs and groups at our host university, this year, being Duke University. The conference is an excellent opportunity to present your research, and to have discussions with research colleagues about what is going on in the world today and what is going to be important in  the future. This year’s unique double meeting provides an even broader opportunity for student and researcher alike.

The conference is also an excellent opportunity to learn about and to share your work related to the use or generation of short pulses in a wide variety of application areas. It is also a venue to interact with the engineering research management at Coherent and to hear about the latest advances that Coherent has made in support of these vital application areas. We want to know how we can better support you, what laser technology you need in order to be successful in the future, and how we can bring the tools you need to the research community.

BRING YOUR STUDENTS

One of the keys to our conference’s success has been the involvement of students. The conference will have a poster session dominated by student prepared posters, highlighting their research achievements. The poster session will be judged by our esteemed panel of speakers and the students will have the opportunity interact with this group directly.

FIRST TIME EVER FOR SEUFC -  DUKE UNIVERSITY

Each year we move the conference to a different Southeast based research institution so as to highlight and tour the laboratories that support  the research activities of each school. This year we are pleased to be able to visit the research groups of Duke University and will be touring labs in the Chemistry Department, Physics Department, and the Center for Interdisciplinary Engineering, Medicine and Applied Sciences (CIEMAS). You will have ample opportunity to tour these labs and see first hand the cutting edge science being conducted at Duke.

Please make plans to attend now. A preliminary program, registration, hotel, and general information is available on this web site.  Please use applicable links found below.

CALL FOR PAPERS AND POSTERS:

Oral and poster presentations are solicited on all areas of research in which ultrafast lasers are utilized. Applications in the areas of time resolved spectroscopy, femto-chemistry and biology, plasma generation, terahertz generation, ablative applications, and imaging are but a few of the application areas we have enjoyed presentations from in past years and all are welcomed. It is the diversity of topics and the opportunity for cross application collaborations that has been a benchmark of success for the conference. Please submit your talk title with your registration and abstract  in an email to me as soon as you can.

Additional information about the student poster session

Special conference awards will be given for the best student poster presentations.  Registrants should indicate their eligibility for student awards when submitting their abstracts. For the student poster presenters, we would like to have a single slide describing your work, again as soon as possible after your registration. You will be given an opportunity to give a “preview” of your poster in a one minute presentation to conference attendees.  Limited funds will be available to student presenters through a student grant program to help defray costs for travel and lodging. To submit for the student travel grant, please fill out the grant request on the registration page. Student poster presenters will be given priority consideration.

NO REGISTRATION FEES

The conference is free. There are no registration fees for either meeting, and you will be our guest for dinner. This year we will actually have two dinners. There will be one dinner on Monday evening sponsored by the Imaging Center, and a second dinner on Tuesday evening sponsored by Coherent and the SEUFC. We hope to have interesting after-dinner speakers for both events.

We look forward to seeing you at the Special Combined Conference at Duke University, Durham, North Carolina in December. Please register early and look for updated information in the coming weeks on our web site and in your email. If you have any specific questions, please contact me directly. My office number is 770-788-2847 or 800-400-3008. My email is scott.crane@coherent.com.

Please remember the dates for the conference are earlier than in previous years, December 14-16. Two great meetings in one.

We look forward to your participation.
